The interior of Dominica should not be missed as there are so many beautiful sights to explore, especially for a waterfall fanatic like me! So when John and Krissy arrived, we rented a car and set out to traverse the island and see as many sights as we could see in 3 days. Join us in this pictorial tour of Dominica!<\/p>\n

Day 1, May 11, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our first stop was at the little chocolate factory hidden on the east coast. We bought rum balls, banana chocolate, spice chocolate and tangerine chocolate. The tour was extremely interesting.<\/p>\n

Our next stop was at the Red Rocks, where fast moving lava flowed down the mountain to the sea, burning everything in its path. Once the boiling lava met the sea, it quickly cooled and left behind a slate grey peninsula made of basalt which was rich in iron. As this basalt met the elements of sea water and sun, it left behind rich colored red rocks.<\/p>\n

Then it was on through the mountains looking for a good spot for lunch.<\/p>\n

John scoped us out a lovely lunch place at Pagua Bay Bar and Grill<\/a> where we sat on the outside patio with a lovely view of the coast and surrounding mountains.<\/p>\n

Now it was time to cool off at the Emerald Pool<\/a>. This short hike to the waterfall was through lush vegetation with flowing streams running over rocks down the mountainside.<\/p>\n

After returning to the boat and cleaning up, we ate at Madiba Beach Cafe and called it an early night.<\/p>\n

Day 2, May 12, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n

While the day started off overcast with showers, it did not deter us from jumping in the car and traveling south along the west shore through Roseau to the southern tip of the island, Scotts Head.<\/p>\n

On our way out of Portsmouth, John popped in and got everyone a Roti sandwich which was a tortilla like bread filled with curried potatoes and either, chicken, vegetables or beef. We stop along the coast and ate these delightful sandwiches for lunch. The view was magnificent.<\/p>\n

Scotts Head had a lovely bay on one side and flanked by the passage between Dominica and Martinique on the other side. We were hoping the wind would subside in the next few days so that we could sail across the passage onto St. Lucia.<\/p>\n

We took the narrow road straight up to the top of the point at Scotts Head.<\/p>\n

Our next stop was Champagne Beach. I regret that I don’t have any pictures to share with you of this cute beach where we snorkeled among of the flowing bubbles rising to the top from the rock crevices 10-15 feet below the surface. The beach was aptly named by these magical bubbles!<\/p>\n

After a long wonderful day, we had dinner at Infinity<\/a> beside a babbling creek.<\/p>\n

Ben and Krissy had lobster, while John had chicken and I had some amazing coconut shrimp! If you are ever near Portsmouth, Dominica, this is a must stop place to eat! We tried to replicate their coconut bread, and while it was good, it was not the same wonderful flavor and texture!<\/p>\n

Day 3, Friday the 13!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another waterfall or two was calling our names this morning. So we dinghied in and Ben drove us back towards Roseau to Trafalgar Falls<\/a>.<\/p>\n

John found us another wonderful lunch spot with a magnificent view, River Rock Cafe and Bar<\/a>! The veranda overlooked a waterfall and a small river running down the mountain.<\/p>\n

After lunch we took the short hike up to Trafalgar Falls which was two falls, the Papa and the Mama.<\/p>\n

While Krissy and I sat and cooled ourselves in the pools of the waterfalls, John bounded over boulders to explore their inner crevices.<\/p>\n

The lush tropical foliage surrounding the falls, as well as lining the walkway to and from, were as enchanting as the falls themselves.<\/p>\n

We really did not want to leave this heavenly spot, but as it was Friday, traffic in the Capital, Roseau would begin to pick up in earnest and we wanted to be ahead of the rush as we traversed the mountainous roads back north to Portsmouth.<\/p>\n

Since we had the car for one more night, we went up the road to another waterfront restaurant, Roots Rock Bar and Restaurant<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Saturday, May 14, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n

As we had to return the car this morning, we ended up exploring Portsmouth by dinghy and on foot. We went to the market and bought another pineapple (that tasted like candy), a Caribbean apricot, more bananas, tomatoes and cucumbers.<\/p>\n

We ate lunch at a cute garden restaurant, Maford House Cafe. The food was perfect beach food, fish and chips and pizza. When we stopped to buy cheesecake bites on the way out, we got to visiting with the owner, Whitney, who had moved here from Canada 25 years ago. She gave us containers to carry the cheesecakes home. Then she offered to drive us to pick up some ice and take us to the dock where we left our dinghy. Krissy and John decided to walk towards town and check out some shops. After Whitney let Ben and I off at the dock, she found John and Krissy and drove them to the Purple Turtle and bought them a beer. She was quite the character and super friendly!<\/p>\n

We had so many mangos on the boat that were quickly ripening. So Krissy cut them all up. For dinner we had fresh homemade coconut bread, chicken and mango over coconut rice, and of course cheesecake bites.<\/p>\n

It was a perfect ending to a wonderful visit with some of our closest friends. We were so blessed that they had the time to come and visit. Hopefully next time, the wind will cooperate and we can do some sailing!<\/p>\n
