We debated this year whether to stick around for Carnival in Grenada or to venture out and seek solitude on another island. However, we had heard that the 2-day event would be better organized this year with increased island involvement. In addition, Ben loves to “play” carnival. I am more of a by-stander, but here we go….
First off, I will say the whole Carnival event was more organized as they started and ended closer to the time indicated. There was even a published schedule on Facebook.
Plus, having experienced Carnival in 2022, we knew more about what to expect. To learn about the history of Carnival as well as why it happens in August rather than during Lent, check out Grenada Carnival, Spice Mas 2022.
J’ouvert, Jab Jab
We played Carnival with a number of friends from the marina which enhanced the fun and festivities. We all gathered around the entrance to Port Louis Marina about 0500 bright and early on Monday, August 13 for J’ouvert, Jab Jab.
It was almost impossible to walk through the crowds without brushing up against someone doused in motor oil and/or paint. Ben and I got a healthy helping of both when someone threw a bucket of oil and paint up in the air. I was just thankful it didn’t land in my hair!
The marina smartly had a wash station where you were scrubbed before entering too far into the property. I was happy not to have to clean this mess off on the boat. The clothes, now that was another task altogether! If we play carnival next year, we will certainly wear these same clothes!
Monday Afternoon Pageant
This parade was a precursor to the more elaborate costumes on Monday. The Villagers follow their designated truck with loudspeakers down the hill and around Lagoon Street. It was hot so we didn’t stay too long at this event. Children also participated in the pageant.
Monday Night Mas
Monday Night Mas, or what is better known as the Battle of the Bands, began coming down the hill around 2100. This parade went well into the night, until 0200 Tues a.m. We got to enter into the fun as well, thanks to Amy who won an extra set of paraphernalia. It was quite the site to see until the rain drove us back to the boat, but it did not stop the revelers!
Parade of the Bands
After Monday Night Mas ended, it was fairly quiet around the lagoon until about 1400 on Tuesday when the Parade of the Bands could be heard coming down the hill. We were told the costumes would be more elaborate this year and some were quite spectacular. The Grenadians are proud people that do not seem to have the same body image issues as we do in the USA.
All in all, I think everyone had a good time this year. It was nice that the schedule was more closely followed so that we could participate in every part of the 2-day street festival that surrounded the lagoon where our boat was moored. While it was still extremely loud, there were nice breaks between events in which to rest our ears and find some time to sleep.
Now that Carnival has come and gone, we are back to our routines of walking in the morning, completing the never-ending list of boat chores and hanging out with friends.
Check out this Mango Chutney recipe! It is delicious and super easy to make!
